The Furrows Overview

In Namwali Serpell's novel The Furrows, first person narrator Cassandra, or Cee Williams is only 12 years old when she watches her younger brother Wayne drown. In the wake of his death, Cee becomes increasingly unable to remember and accurately retell the story of Wayne's death. Years later, when she meets a man with the same name as her brother, Cee is unsure what to make of her past, her brother, and her new lover. Written from three first person perspectives and toying with conventional notions of plot structure throughout, the novel explores themes including loss, grief, and memory.
