In The Fifth Season, the first book of the Broken Earth series by N. K. Jemisin, a powerful orogene named Alabaster takes revenge on the evils of the world by setting off a powerful earthquake that splits a continent known as Stillness. Months after the initial earthquake, the injured Alabaster is dying. He calls on Syen, also known as Damaya and Essun, to finish the job for him. Themes in the novel include bias and racism toward the orogenes, the impact of lore on lifestyle, and the abuse of the orogenes by the Fulcrum leaders.
