The Book of Dead Birds Overview

The Book of Dead Birds, a novel by Gayle Brandeis, is the story of two women, Ava Sing Lo and her mother Hye-yang, who, through Ava's attempt to put things right between the two of them, establish a mother-daughter bond that never previously existed. In doing so, the two women make peace with Hye-yang's past and begin to create new stories for themselves as strong women. The Book of Dead Birds deals with themes revolving around the relationship between men and women, finding one’s identity, the question of whether one can really ever know another person, environmentalism, and renewal and survival.
