Kim Richardson’s The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, a historical fiction novel, tells the story of Cussy Mary Carter, a Blue woman of Troublesome, Kentucky. Cussy Mary works as a librarian for the Pack Horse Librarian project, a Great Depression era WPA program. She delivers books, scrapbooks, and sometimes letters and news on mule, bringing joy and access to the outside world to folks otherwise secluded from it.
