The Best We Could Do is a memoir, presented in a graphic novel format, tells the story of Thi Bui and her family. The narrative begins with Thi's quest to uncover her family history and learn about her parents' lives in Vietnam before they emigrated to America. As she strives to connect with her parents in this way, she learns about their childhoods and early adulthoods growing up as several consecutive wars ravaged their home. Thi also tells the story of her family's experience as refugees that left Vietnam by boat when she was just a few years old as well as their early years in America. The Best We Could Do explores themes of family, inheritance, parent/child relationships, oral history, and the refugee experience.
