Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play takes place in Reading, Pennsylvania, one of the many cities in America that has experienced a drastic decrease in the citizens' quality of living since the start of the twenty-first century, due to unemployment, globalization, the exploitation of cheap labor, and difficult working conditions. Through her realistic depictions of the relationships among a diverse cast of working-class Americans, Lynn Nottage examines themes of inherited social status, race, ambition, oppression, community, and loyalty.
