Women over the age of 30 in Britain gained the vote in 1918. While many argue that women gained the vote mainly because of their contribution to the war effort during World War I, two other factors -- peaceful campaigning form suffragists and the the militant campaign of the suffragettes -- played roles that were just as important.

There were many differences between the methods of the Suffragists and Suffragettes and some similarities, both arising from the nature of the membership and the leadership of the two unions.
