Stella by Starlight is a historical novel by Susan M. Draper. It is told by a narrator who has access solely to the thoughts and feelings of the novel’s protagonist, 11-year-old Stella Mills. Stella is a young black girl living in Bumblebee, North Carolina in 1932. The time period is during the height of Jim Crow laws in the American South. Stella comes from a hard-working, tightly-knit family and community that is shaken after the Klu Klux Klan becomes active once more in response to the Great Depression. The novel follows Stella over the course of several months as she grows as a writer and helps her family overcome challenges and threats posed by the Klan.
