Sonnet 116 (Shakespeare) Overview

Shakespeare's "Sonnet 116" is a Shakespearean sonnet published among his 154 sonnets in a 1609 folio by Thomas Thorpe. They are dedicated to "WH," usually thought to be the Earl of Pembroke. There are 13 surviving copies today. Most of the sonnets address themes of love. This sonnet describes the ideal romantic love in a number of playful, and possibly ironic, ways.
