Silence! The Court Is in Session Overview

Silence! The Court is in Session, by Indian (South Asian) playwright Vijay Tandulkar, is a dark satire on the legal system and the morality it professes to protect. A troupe of non-professional actors entertain themselves by enacting what is described as a Living Courtroom, but as their mock-trial progresses, their imaginative play takes a painful turn. As it makes pointed comments about the legal system, in India and arguably in general, the narrative also explores issues related to the oppression of women, longings for love, and the value of compassion.
