Summary and Analysis

Shadow of a Doubt begins as viewers watch a couple, without seeing their faces, who are finishing a beautiful dance. Then, we see a man lying in bed smoking a cigar. Money is strewn all over the bedside table. A maid comes in to tell him that two men were looking for him, and she believes they'll be back. She thinks he's tired and needs a rest, and she lets him know that his friends wanted to surprise him. He explains that they're not really friends, and he expects he now has to meet them. She pulls down the blind so he can rest.

As soon as the woman is gone, the man sits up and looks around the room. He throws his glass into the wall and opens the shade to see the men. He thinks they're bluffing because they have nothing...
