Severance is the debut novel of writer Ling Ma. The novel follows Candace Chen, an office worker in New York City. Following an apocalyptic outbreak of a new disease, Candace joins a group of survivors who are traveling west in search of safety and shelter. The novel explores Candace’s life both before and after the apocalyptic outbreak. The novel explores themes of work, family, friendship, routine, survival, and loss.
