Sarah Canary tells the story of a mysterious woman who appears to Chin Ah Kin, a Chinese man in the Washington Territories in 1873. Sarah is dressed all in black and doesn’t speak. His uncle insists Chin lead the woman away, but Chin soon begins to feel responsibility for her. She ends up committed to an asylum and Chin helps her escape, after which they end up traveling to freedom with B.J., another resident of the asylum, and Adelaide Dixon, a feminist lecturer.
