St. Bernard is a 4th class municipality in the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 23,089 people in 4,746 households. On February 17, 2006, a tragic series of mudslides killed up to 200 residents with a thousand people still missing. It's one of the greatest tragedies the Philippines has ever experienced but some critics have observed that the romantic life of a former President's daughter have more staying power in the Filipino people's mind.Now , the areas affected by mudslide created a new vegetation covering the a thousand of people missing underneath. Affected families were treated by the government and other non-government organizations all over the world building new houses creating the New Guinsaugon as the name of their village located near the town proper.
