Riot (Poem) Overview

“Riot,” by Gwendolyn Brooks, was commissioned by the magazine Black Expressions. The editor of the magazine asked Brooks to write a poem about the uprisings that occurred after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. It was then republished in her 1973 collection Blacks.
