Rifles for Watie Overview

At its heart, the novel Rifles for Watie is about the Civil War, primarily the battles on the Western Front. The action takes place in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and the Cherokee, Creek, and Choctaw Nation lands (present day Oklahoma). The novel begins by introducing the reader to Jeff Bussey, a young man from Linn County, Kansas. He’s eager to be part of the Union army in the impending war against the South.
