Regeneration in many cases begins when the mature cells at the site of the wound begin to go back to an immature state. The group of immature cells, the blastema, then regrows the missing part. Many scientists believe that the ability for regeneration must be a basic part of genetic composition, but the genes have for some reason, fallen into disuse in many species.
