Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong is banned in Huong’s home country of Vietnam for its depiction of the Communist government during events before and after the Vietnam War. The novel is told from the perspective of a 20-year-old woman named Hang. She's living in Russia, then the Soviet Union, as an “exported worked” in 1975. In the story, Hang recounts her childhood, and her mother’s and grandmother’s childhoods, which date back to 1954 during northern Vietnam’s period of land reform. The campaign redistributed privately owned land to more than 1.5 million peasant families.
