Ode to a Nightingale (Poem) Overview

“Ode to a Nightingale” is an eight-stanza ode by English Romantic poet John Keats. Composed in 1819, it is one of six odes Keats wrote that year. It first appeared in print in Annals of Fine Arts in 1820. The poem depicts a speaker in a state of emotional pain, wishing to identify with the carefree song of the nightingale he overhears. Inspired by the song, he imagines himself passing through the ecstatic states of drunkenness, flight of fancy, and suicide.
