Japanese popularity

Mirmo first achieved enormous popularity in Japan in 2001 when it was launched as a serialized comic in Shogakukan's leading girls' manga Ciao. Mirmo was then launched as an animated series on TV Tokyo in April 2002 to September 2005. It has since achieved massive success in Japan, winning Kodansha's 27th annual "Children's Group" manga award, as well as TV Tokyo's award for top-rated new program in 2003.

Story

The main character, Katie Minami (Kaede Minami in the Japanese versions), is a cheerful and energetic eighth grader. Katie is shy around her male classmates, so it is difficult for her to date. One day, on her way home from school, Katie walks into a mysterious shop and buys a blue cocoa mug. When she arrives at home, she casually peeks into the bottom of the mug and discovers an engraved note which says, "If you read this message aloud while pouring hot cocoa into the mug, a love fairy ("muglox") will appear and grant your every wish." The skeptical but curious Katie follows the directions and announces her wish to date Dylan Yuki (Setsu Yuuki in the Japanese versions), the class heartthrob. A love fairy named Mirmo (Mirumo) appears. At first she was afraid of him but later understood that he was a muglox. Katie soon finds out that Mirmo prefers eating chocolate and creating mischief over helping Katie. Mirmo, it seems, is prince of the muglox world. Horrified at the prospect of having to marry Rima (Rirumu), his princess bride-to-be, Mirmo has escaped the muglox world. Hot on his heels, however, are Rima, Yatch (Yashichi) the bounty hunter, Murumo (mirmo's brother), and a cast of hundreds of muglox ranging from good to bad to nutty. The muglox see to it that school life for Katie and her friends is never the same.

Characters

The series stars Mirmo (Mirumo or ミルモ in the original Japanese), a fairy, and Katie Minami (Kaede Minami in the original Japanese). Characters in the series include: Main (Humans)

    • Katie, a human who is in love with her male classmate, Dylan or Setsu. With her fairy guardian/friend (Mirmo), she wishes for Dylan's love.
    • Dylan Yuki (Setsu Yuuki, a boy with whom Katie is in love with. Dylan is very smart and seen most of the time reading books.
    • Azumi Hidaka, is a girl who is jealous of Katie and is also in love with Dylan. This makes Katie, Dylan and Azumi a love triangle. Usually on the way to school, when Azumi finds Katie near Dylan, she kicks her or punches her or hit her or any wrestling moves. While trying to date Dylan and keeping Katie away from them, she orders Yatch (her muglox fairy) to clean her room.
    • Kyle Matsutake (Kaoru Matsutake), a boy who eventually falls in love with Katie. Kyle belongs to a very rich family (Matsutake) so he uses his money to make Katie love him.
