Microsoft Portal

Microsoft Office Live is an Internet-based software service designed for small businesses with fewer than ten employees launched on February 15, 2006,^[1] and is part of Microsoft's Windows Live initiative. The software was released on November 16, 2006 and is currently only available to residents of the United States and the United Kingdom. In November 2006, the service expanded (in a beta version) to France, Germany and Japan.^[2]

Features

The service has several features. First, it gives users own domain name, web site, and e-mail accounts. Second, it gives users access to various management software, including project, consumer, and document management applications.^[2] Finally, it offers clients a password-protected "shared site" to organize information.^[3] There are three levels to the service: Office Live Basics, Office Live Essentials and Office Live Premium.^[2] In The U.S., Office Live Basics remains free, while Office Live Essentials costs $19.95 USD per month and Office Live Premium costs $39.95 USD per month.

Small Business

Basics

Basics provides a user with its own domain name, and the ability to create their own website. It also provides periodic web site traffic reports. Basic does not allow customer to upload third party tool. The package includes 25 e-mail accounts under the registered domain, 500 MB storage and 10 GB of bandwidth. Microsoft requires a credit card number on file to register for the free service.

Essentials

Essential includes the features in the Basics edition plus Shared Sites and some management applications.^[3] It also has larger website storage and supports third-party HTML editors. It also increases the storage to 1 GB and bandwidth to 15GB.

Premium

Premium provides all the features of Office Live Basics and Office Live Collaboration, plus it provides a website with 2 GB of storage, 50 e-mail accounts (with 2 GB of storage each) and more advanced website traffic reports.^[3]

Workspace

Workspace includes the ability to share documents and organize events, but does not include a website or a first level domain. Collaboration is currently in beta for all locales.

System Requirements

Many of the features of Office Live (including sign-up) require Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later running on Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or Windows Server 2003.
