Maud’s Line, by Margaret Verble, is a story about a young Cherokee woman named Maud who lives a hardscrabble life on her family’s allotment land in Oklahoma. Maud hopes to one day live a better life with electricity, plumbing, and an education. When a handsome and educated peddler comes to town, Maud’s dreams seem to be within her reach.
