Marie Laberge belongs to a new generation of Quebec dramatists. The author of some seventeen plays, twelve of which have been produced in theaters in Quebec and sometimes elsewhere, she has also written a novel and taught classes in theater studies at the university level. She is an accomplished actress: she has directed several stage works, and for three years she was an administrator of the Théâtre du Trident, the foremost repertory company in Quebec City. An active member of the dynamic Centre d'Essai des Auteurs Dramatiques, she has been an important figure in Quebec theater since 1982, the year in which she received a Governor General's Award for C'était avant la guerre à l'Anse à Gilles, probably the best known of her plays.
Laberge's works reflect her undeniable concern with the place of women in society, yet they are far removed from thesis plays. Her portrayal of everyday life is a complex one; the characters she creates are multidimensional.
