As a first name, Marcus or Markus is of Roman origin. The name is popular in Italy and Germany, and increasingly, in the Netherlands. It is also popular in the English-speaking world, although there it is not as ubiquitous as the shortened 'Mark'. The latter is also the common English translation of the name of the Gospel writer 'Μάρκος', whose name is translated in other languages as 'Markus' (German) or 'Marcus' (Dutch). Biblical translation traditions likely influence name choices in different languages. Marcus originally referred to Mars. Since Mars was identified as the Roman god of War, the name 'Marcus' can by extension be taken to refer to Ares in the Greek pantheon.
