Malcolm Shabazz (b. 1985) is the son of Qubilah Shabazz and grandson of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz. On 1 June, 1997, Malcolm, then 12 and living with his grandmother Betty Shabazz at the time, set fire to her Westchester County, NY apartment. Betty Shabazz suffered burns over 80% of her body and remained in intensive care for three weeks, until she died on 23 June, 1997. Malcolm was later sentenced to eighteen months in juvenile detention for manslaughter and held at a youth facility in Valhalla, New York.
