Just Mercy (Bryan Stevenson) Overview

This non-fiction book explores what its author sees as some of the more damaging flaws in the American justice / legal system. It conducts that exploration on two levels: first, with a detailed recounting of the process by which an African-American man named Walter McMillian was wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to death, eventually being exonerated; and second, with a series of example-based commentaries on specific failings in the system. Throughout these parallel explorations, the narrative also explores issues relating to the nature of hope, the impact of history on the present (particularly in terms of the American legal system), and the importance of humanizing the imprisoned and/or criminally convicted.
