Musical career

Pike began playing the violin at the age of five, and in 1998 she gained a place at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, after auditioning at the age of eight.[3] At the age of ten she was chosen to play in the presence of the Prince of Wales at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and at the same age she made her concerto debut, playing Haydn's Violin Concerto in G with the Chetham's School Orchestra and with the Lake District Summer Music Orchestra in the Menuhin Concert, Windermere.[4] She now studies with David Takeno in London, and was recently awarded a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, beginning at the age of sixteen.[5]

BBC Young Musician of the Year

In 2002 Pike became the thirteenth person to win the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award, following her performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis.[6] Aged twelve at the time, she is the youngest winner of the competition so far. Earlier the same year she also won fourth prize in the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition.[5]

Further events

Following her success in the BBC Young Musician of the Year, Pike has played in concerts and recitals in major venues all over the world. Recent events include in July 2005 when she took part in the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, and in November 2005 when she made her evening recital debut in the Wigmore Hall, both to great critical acclaim.[6]
