Jefferson is a city in Marion County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,024 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Marion CountyGR6, and is situated in East Texas. The city is a tourism center, with popular attractions including: Jay Gould's railroad car, the Sterne Fountain, Excelsior House, the House of the Four Seasons, and the bayous formed by Big Cypress, Little Cypress, and Black Cypress located in and around the city.

Geography
Jefferson is located at (32.761013, -94.349331)GR1. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.4 km²), of which, 4.3 square miles (11.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (1.58%) is water.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,024 people, 871 households, and 544 families residing in the city. The population density was 465.7 people per square mile (179.6/km²). There were 1,042 housing units at an average density of 239.7/sq mi (92.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 62.80% White, 34.68% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.63% of the population. There were 871 households out of which 23.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.7% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 34.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.86. In the city the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 21.8% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 24.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 80.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.9 males. The median income for a household in the city was $17,034, and the median income for a family was $26,250. Males had a median income of $28,929 versus $14,583 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,558. About 29.4% of families and 32.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 54.1% of those under age 18 and 22.7% of those age 65 or over.
