"Jazz" is a novel by Toni Morrison which takes place in New York in 1926. With his twenty-year marriage disintegrating, Joe Trace takes on an eighteen year-old mistress, whom he later kills when he discovers she is having an affair. Joe's wife, Violet, attacks the girl's corpse at the funeral -and both husband and wife must confront their lives in the aftermath. "Jazz" deals with themes of silence and absence, as well as music.
