Ishi, Last of His Tribe is a tale of two worlds: the dying world of the Yahi, a Northern California Native American tribe and the world of the white men, or "saldu," who annihilate them. When the story opens, Ishi is a young boy living in a village called Tuliyani in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. He lives there with Mother, Grandmother and Grandfather, Elder Uncle, cousin Tushi and friend Timawi. These seven Yahi are the last living members of their tribe.
Ishi is a boy yearning to become a man and follow in his late father's footsteps. His father was killed in a surprise attack by white men many years before.
