Independent People Overview

Independent People by Halldór Laxness is a historical novel written in the 1930s and set in the late nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries in Iceland. It tells the story of Bjartur, a sheep farmer in an isolated rural region of Iceland, and his desperation to remain an independent man despite the struggle he faces to survive in brutal physical and economic conditions. The novel deals with themes of independence, economics, and the treatment of women.
