Heaven: A Novel Overview

Mieko Kawakami's novel, Heaven, takes place in modern-day Japan. The story's narrator, identified only as Eyes, is tormented by bullies, possibly because he has a lazy eye. A girl named Kojima befriends him. She is the only person to show any level of kindness, but she is bullied as well. While Eyes hates that he is unable to change the situation, Kojima believes that accepting her fate is a sign of strength. Kojima eventually suffers a severe breakdown, and Eyes undergoes surgery to correct his vision. The novel's main themes are the need for companionship, the effects of bullying, and discerning right from wrong.
