Genie: A Scientific Tragedy is the first book written by journalist Russ Rymer. This book explores the scientific actions taken when a thirteen year old girl was rescued after years of social isolation. Genie spent her childhood from the age of twenty months until she was thirteen strapped to an infant potty chair in a dark room of her father's house. This was done by the father in an attempt to protect what he thought was a mentally retarded child. Upon her rescue, Genie could not speak except a few simple phrases more than likely spoken to her repeatedly throughout her captivity.
