Frogkisser! Overview

Garth Nix’s young adult fantasy novel Frogkisser! inverts everything a reader might think they know about princesses, frogs, wizards, witches, and beyond. The novel follows the story of teenage Princess Anya of Trallonia, the younger sister of the heir to the throne. The sisters' otherwise idyllic and simple existence is subverted by their evil sorcerer stepfather Duke Rikard, who is intent on stealing the crown from her sister before she is of age. At first, Anya simply has to save Prince Denholm, her sister’s newest love, after her stepfather transforms him into a frog. But soon her Quest for the ingredients to the necessary potion becomes much more than simply acquiring a list of grocery items. Nix weaves his novel together with well known stories and legends that young readers will recognize and love, while using them to invert gender roles and make the reader question the stories they have grown up with. The reader will also learn about teamwork and the importance of kindness along Anya’s journey to save her sister and her kingdom.
