Five Feet Apart Overview

In Five Feet Apart, a young adults’ novel by Mikki Daughtry, Rachael Lippincott, and Tobias Iaconis, teenagers Will Newman and Stella Grant meet and fall in love at the hospital where they are both patients. Will and Stella are afflicted with cystic fibrosis, and it is dangerous for them to get physically close to one another because of the potential for spreading bacteria. Over a two week whirlwind romance, they attempt to defy the obstacles of their illness to be together, but when Stella is offered the opportunity for a lung transplant, the teens are forced to make a difficult choice. The novel considers themes related to love, distance, and taking chances.
