Cherie Demiline's novel Empire of Wild is a mystical story of Joan, a member of a Native community in Canada. Her husband Victor has been missing for almost a year when Joan sees him preaching with a traveling ministry. He claims to have no knowledge of Joan or their marriage, but he is actually trapped in the woods with a rogarou – his beastly nature that is warring with supremacy over Victor's humanity that still longs to be with Joan. The novel's main themes are the importance of relationships, one's true identity, the power of knowledge, the power of anger and fear, and the role of culture in a society.
