Deep Water Overview

In Patricia Highsmith's novel Deep Water, Vic Van Allen has never tried to stop his wife Melinda's extramarital affairs. Then one night, Vic attempts an alternate tactic, telling Melinda's boyfriend that he is the man behind the unsolved Malcolm McRae murder. The story soon spreads around town, yet does not wound Vic's reputation. Vic's ego becomes inflated as he is pleased with how the story empowers him. After the McRae murder is solved, however, Vic becomes so desperate to reassert his dominance in his marriage and community, he is driven to heinous and violent acts. Highsmith's fast-paced psychological thriller explores themes including guilt, intelligence, and power.
