Dark Money is a thorough, wide-spanning investigation into the rise of the influence of outside money in the current political system, specifically on the far-right. Jane Mayer provides a dense and factual analysis of what she believes is a forty year plan to shift political discourse, public opinion, and the entire mindset of the country to the right. The shift was sponsored by some of corporate America's most successful business tycoons and aimed to dismantle any government programs that may intrude on their bottom lines. Through systematic investments in the spread of free-market, anti-regulatory ideas, wealthy special interests laid a solid infrastructure which effectively allowed them to buy power and mend the rules to retain it. With Dark Money, Mayer draws an intricate web of political front groups that lead back to the same wealthy families and same far-right ideologies at every turn.
