Plot summary

At the beginning we see a girl playing a cello with the music on, and in a couple of scenes we notice a girl in an operation room wearing an oxygen mask, bleeding. As the cello music goes on we see the rest of the credits and then the movie title. Then we notice a couple of students playing music on the cello, Hong Mi-ju (Seong Hyeon-ah) watching. Before she goes home she walks to her locker, takes some pills- but she isn't the only one there- Kim Tae-yeon (Park Da-an), another student was there too! She tells Mi-ju how she given her a bad grade in an exam so she can't go to music college anymore, but Mi-ju looks as if she doesn't know her well. While Mi-ju tries to stay out of Tae-yeon's way, in fury, Tae-yeon scratches Mi-ju wrist leaves three big marks. Then Tae-yeon leaves. In the car on her way home, Mi-ju turns on the music player. The music was the sound of a cello and while Mi-ju was driving she didn't seem to feel comfortable and suddenly the marks where Tae-yeon left start moving. Later she has a vision of getting into a car accident at night. Finally she gets home. Mi-ju empties her bag and her cell phone rings, leaving a mysterious message reading: "Are you happy? You should be." Mi-ju looks for everyone in the house, but it was all dark. Finally she notices one of her two daughters, Yoon-jin (the elder sister played by Choi Ji-eun). Then the lights turn on. Her husband (Jeong Ho-bin), her sister in law Aunt Kyeong-ran (Wang Bit-na) and her two daughters Yoon-hye and Yoon-jin. Everyone except Yoon-jin sings 'Happy Birthday' to Mi-ju. Then everyone except Yoon-jin gets very pleased. Mi-ju blows the candles and opens her presents. She notices that her gift from Kyeong-ran was a music album. Another present from her husband was a necklace with a Christian cross on it. Yoon-hye gives a surprise together with Yoon-jin by revealing her hand. I am not sure what it was- but could you guess? Then in the tub, Mi-ju tells Yoon-jin how happy and grateful she was. Then, she notices blood appearing in the tub. Next day the doctor says that Yoon-jin just reached puberty and started her menustration and everything was alright. Before Mi-ju and Yoon-jin left, she decided to buy her daughter some underwear. While Mi-ju and Yoon-jin walk home they stop at a music store. Yoon-jin stares at a cello as if she wants it. Finally Mi-ju agrees to buy it. On the way home we see their dog Sunny, barking. Mi-ju tries to tell Sunny to be quiet, but Sunny just keeps barking. Walking past him, Yoon-jin gives a quick flash of a vicious face. Soon they notice the new housekeeper, Ji-sook and Kyeong-ran introduces her to them. Then Kyeong-ran tells Ji-sook what sort of daily chores she had to do around the house. That night before dinner Mi-ju tries to teach Yoon-jin the cello. The sounds of the cello could be heard throughout the whole house. The rest of the family watches, including Yoon-hye. yoon-hye looks at the cello, hoping that she'll get a chance to play too. Early the next morning Mi-ju looks for Sunny, then notices the dead dog in the doghouse. Behind her was Ji-sook and Mi-ju decides the dog should be taken out of the house before the children see it. Yoon-hye goofs around Kyeong-ran's room while she nearly gets prepared for her wedding with her love Hyeon-woo. They both thnk out what dress to wear. Then Yoon-hye points at a crimson gown with a flowered brooch. The phone rings and Kyeong-rain calls Hyeon-woo. Sooner or later, Yoon-hye in the kitchen drinking hears the sound of the cello. She walks to Yoon-jin's room and asks her if she can have a turn on the cello. Yoon-jin was mute so she couldn't answer. In fact, she didn't actually want to talk to Yoon-hye. Yoon-hye tried to get the cello by NEARLY taking it out of her hand but she gets stopped, have her arm bitten by her sister. Yoon-hye leaves the room, upset agreeing that her sister can have the cello all to herself. In the next room, she finds it with a terrible mess and then Kyeong-ran steps out with sleep-disturbed hair and droopy eyes. Kyeong-ran clsoes the door again. In the restroom, Mi-ju gets a call from Yoon-hye, saying that something is wrong with Kyeong-ran. Mi-ju gets home and knocks on Kyeong-ran's door, but it was locked. Yoon-jin steps out too, frightened. Mi-ju hugs Yoon-jin thinking everything will be alright. Then the father tells Kyeong-ran to open the door but she refuses and soon everyone hears smashing glasses and her screaming at everyone to leave her alone. Yoon-jin is sleeping in bed, Mi-ju patting her face. Suddenly Yoon-jin's face changes into a ghost's face. Mi-ju hears voices around her, although there was nobody- but her and Yoon-jin. Meanwhile, we notice that Kyeong-ran's fiance has been stolen, and we notices her looking in the mirror with smeared make-up, crying and malicious laughter. The phone rings and Kyeong-ran answers it, but nobody answers. In anger, she smashes the phone to the floor. Kyeong-ran stares at her picture frame her there was a big crack and a ghostly face stepped out, face to face with Kyeong-ran. Then the ghost throws Kyeong-ran outside, breaking the windows. Mi-ju and her husband are woken by the husband, so they unlock the door of Kyeong-ran's room looking inside only to find broken windows with wind blowing inside. Yoon-jin gets up and opens the curtains, finding Kyeong-ran strangled. while Yoon-jin was still playing the cello, the hosuekeeper finds a music tape casette and hands it to Yoon-jin. Yoon-jin inserts it into the radio. Soon Mi-ju catches Yoon-jin playing with the music on, and stops the radio. She asks Yoon-jin where the tape came from, but Yoon-jin couldn't answer. (Just in case you've forgotten, she is mute.) Mi-ju rips out all the film, so the music can't play anymore. Soon Mi-ju gets a ticket to a cello concert. Mi-ju goes to the concert, cello playing. When the first song was finished, the cello player left the stage for an interval. Mi-ju glanced around her. Nobody was on the seats. It seemed that everybody left. Then on the stage Mi-ju notices a ghost on the cello, the voice of Yoon-hye saying 'One, two, three, four, five.' Then the ghost looks at the audience seats monstrously. Mi-ju notices the people and cello player again, still terrified. She leaves the stage in fear, not knowing what will happen next. Around her as she left, she heard the same voices she heard the night before. Meanwhile at home, Yoon-hye keeps asking Yoon-jin about the cello, and then turns to look at the cello case. When her back was turned again, the cello was missing. Yoon-hye opens the cello case, finding the cello. Yoon-hye runs to the door, trying to open it, but it was locked. She and Yoon-jinget transported to their home balcony, Yoon-hye hanging off. Soon Mi-ju comes home and notices Yoon-hye about to fall. Yoon-jin takes her fingers off the balcony, the same voices repeating 'One, two, three, four, five.'. Screaming, Yoon-hye falls to the floor lying dead. As Mi-ju notices the corpse of Yoon-hye, rain starts pouring down. Then the father arrives home, asking where Yoon-hye was. Mi-ju didn't know what to say, so she tells the father that Yoon-hye was off to camp. The cell phone rings and the father answers, it hearing Yoon-hye's voice, repeating: 'Hello, this is Song Yoon-hye. If you wait for a while, I will let you hear my voice." The father climbs down to the basement and notices the dead body of Yoon-hye. Mi-ju is behind him and her husband threatens her that he thinks she killed her daughter. Another strange thing happens, the husband becomes a corpse too. At the top of the stairs, Mi-ju notices the spirit of Tae-yeon, revealing a flashback. In the flashback we see the younger Tae-yeon and Mi-ju sitting together in the park, saying what great weather it was. They think that the song 'Rainy Melody' would be good. Then Tae-yeon gives something to Mi-ju, but Mi-ju refuses, saying that she gets always something that was from her, and she never gives anything to Tae-yeon. Then Tae-yeon decides to be friends with Mi-ju. Later, Mi-ju is driving, Tae-yeon sitting next to her. Antoher time Tae-yeon asks Mi-ju if they are happier when they are together but Mi-ju tells her to be quiet. Not looking, they get into a car accident, nearly falling off a cliff. Mi-ju gets up with a wound on her forehead, Tae-yeon hanging off the door off the car, begging Mi-ju to save her. However Tae-yeon slips and falls down the cliff. Then back to the present day, Tae-yeon walks to the stairs. Mi-ju notices that she may harm Yoon-jin, so she pleads her that if she does then she can have her fingers cut off. But Tae-yeon ignores Mi-ju, so near the stairs Mi-ju finds a knife and stabs Tae-yeon in the back. At the top of the stairs, Mi-ju finds Yoon-jin still holding the cello. Mi-ju snatches the cello and smashes it on the wall. Mi-ju opens the door, but Yoon-jin was missing. Removing the bed quilt, Mi-ju notices the cello again. When Mi-ju back was turned, she notices a bloodied corpse, Mi-ju not knowing whether it was Yoon-jin or not. She feels a mysterious hand of Tae-yeon or Ji-sook's trying to stab Yoon-jin. Mi-ju tries not to but ends up stabbing herself in the heart. Soon we find Mi-ju getting into a car accident so she has to go to hospital. Next day Mi-ju finds her two daughters, her husband and Kyeong-ran coming to visit her. Happy to see them again, she drives home. Unpacking her things, the cell phone rings, with the mysterious message again saying 'Are you happy? You should be." Once again it is all dark, but the lights switch on again. Again the family sings Happy Birthday to Mi-ju. Kyeong-ran gives Mi-ju the same album, Mi-ju giving a surprised look not knowing what to do. Opening the album, she finds some scribbled writing reading 'This is only the beginning.' In fear while reading the album a mysterious hand appears out of Mi-ju's hair and grabs her face. Soon the background fades to black and the credits unroll.
