Carried Away (Short Story) Overview

“Carried Away” is a short story by Alice Munro. It was originally published in The New Yorker in 1991. The story follows Louisa, the librarian in the small town of Carstairs, Alberta, Canada. After an intimate correspondence by mail with a solider fighting in World War One, she is disappointed to discover that the soldier is engaged. She eventually marries the owner of the local factory and continues to reflect upon these two men throughout her life. The story explores themes of love, chance, disillusionment, memory, and personal choice.
