Bowlaway Overview

Bowlaway, a historical novel by Elizabeth McCracken, tells the legacy of Bertha Truitt and her Candlepin bowling alley, Truitt’s Alleys, over the course of the twentieth century in Salford, Massachusetts. The third-person omniscient narrator follows a myriad of characters who find connection and conflict through Truitt’s Alleys. Bertha’s mysterious arrival in Salford begins the genealogical tale of misunderstandings that create a familial devotion to her bowling alley, eventually renamed the titular Bowlaway. The novel deals with themes of bowling, genealogy, love, duty, and sorrow.
