Bowlaway Overview

Bowlaway, by Elizabeth McCracken, spans the 60-year-life of Truitt’s Alley, a candlepin bowling alley built by Bertha Truitt. The novel describes the lives of those touched by Bertha and her bowling alley. Bertha herself is an oddity after showing up one day unconscious in Salford Cemetery. She lives with her black husband, Leviticus Sprague, who is a doctor and poet. The novel, filled with many oddities other than Bertha, focuses on themes such as the inevitable effects of change, the irrefutable existence of racism in the North, and the different attitudes of individuals toward family roots.
