Belzhar Overview

The power of the written word unites a group of traumatized teens in the novel “Belzhar” by Meg Wolitzer. Jamaica “Jam” Gallahue is sent to a school for fragile students because she suffers a deep depression after the death of her boyfriend. At the school, she is assigned to a special English class in which a journal helps Jam to see what really happened in her relationship and helps her heal. Underlying themes in the novel include the darkness of depression, the importance of friendship and the effects of trauma.
