Balm Overview

Balm by Dolan Perkins-Valdez is a historical fiction with traces of fantasy set in Chicago, Illinois in the years following the American Civil War. The third-person omniscient narrator describes the perspectives of various characters from drastically different social standings to illuminate the differences in their experiences at the same historical moment. Their emotional revelations and new relationships are microcosms of the healing that must take place amongst the nation as a whole during Reconstruction. The novel deals with themes of faith and trust, healing, the influence of the past, freedom, and gender roles.
