Balm Overview

Balm by Dolan Perkins-Valdez is a historical fiction with traces of fantasy set in Chicago, Illinois in the years following the American Civil War. The third-person omniscient narrator describes the perspectives of various characters from drastically different social standings to illuminate the differences in their experiences at the same historical moment.
