Bad News (Patrick Melrose) Overview

Bad News is the second book in the Patrick Melrose series of novels. The novel takes place over the course of about 48 hours in New York City in the year 1982. 22-year-old Patrick Melrose is a self-destructive, drug-addicted son of two members of British upper-class society. After Patrick’s abusive father dies in New York City, Patrick goes to New York City to collect his father’s remains. Over the course of Patrick’s time in New York, Patrick struggles with his emotions, addictions, and general isolation. The novel explores themes of emotional trauma, self-destruction, alienation, misanthropy, and addiction.
