Augustana Academy was an educational institution in Canton, South Dakota. In 1884 Augustana College moved from Beloit to Canton. It included Augustana Academy for high school students. In 1917 the Norwegian Lutheran Synod merged to become the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. The new synod combined Augustana College with Lutheran Normal School in Sioux Falls, some 25 miles away. Augustana Academy, no longer a division of the college, remained in Canton. Augustana Academy closed in 1971[1]. Famous alumni include:
- Ernest O. Lawrence, who was pioneer in nuclear medicine. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the first nuclear cyclotron. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are named in his honor.
- Ole Rølvaag, who is best known as an Norwegian-American author who made major contributions to immigration literature.
Since Augustana Academy closed in 1971, its records are held by Augustana College (South Dakota).
