Arsenic and Old Lace Overview

Arsenic and Old Lace is a three-act play by Joseph Kesselring. The play is set “in the present,” which in this case is the year 1941. All of the action in the play takes place in the living room of the Brewster home in Brooklyn, New York, which is described as being “Victorian” and “old fashioned.” Although the central themes of the play include murder and madness, Arsenic and Old Lace is a pure comedy of the “madcap” variety that was popular in the l930s and 40s.
