Summary and Analysis

An American in Paris begins with scenes of Paris, and the voice of Jerry Mulligan who says, "This is Paris, and I'm an American who lives here. My name is Jerry Mulligan, and I'm an ex G.I. In 1945 when the army told me to find my own job, I stayed on. And I'll tell you why: I'm a painter, and all my life that's all I've ever wanted to do." Paris is the only place for a painter. If one can't paint there, then one has no hope.

Jerry lives on the Left Bank and knows everyone on his block. In his small apartment, he is just waking up for the day. While he prepares for his day, he works on a painting and says, "Good morning." to the children who call up to him. Jerry then talks about the friends he...
