Everything you need to understand or teach America is in the Heart by Carlos Bulosan.
Carlos Bulosan, Filipino American poet and activist, delivers an autobiographical description of a poor young man growing up in the Philippines in a family fractured by the need to survive. His story continues to his immigration to America where he hopes to find equality and instead discovers a land embroiled in racism and the labor exploitation of many races. Bulosan creates a graphic social statement about the state of Filipino Americans rights in America during the lead up to World War II with his involvement in the labor movement and the Filipino civil rights movement.
