Alex, real name Alexsandro de Souza, (born September 14, 1977 in Curitiba) is a Brazilian football (soccer) attacking midfielder, who is currently playing for Fenerbahçe S.K. in Turkey after being transferred from Cruzeiro in 2004 for 5 million dollars [3]. He is formerly known for his role as team captain on the Brazilian National Team after rising to prominence with Palmeiras. He is a skillful left-footed player who is adept at taking free-kicks, penalties, and corners for his team, as well as scoring from the run of play. He has tallied numerous goals for every team he has played for and is also known for his playmaking skills; more often than not leading his current league in assists. His flashy dribbling and wise on-field decisions have made him a quick fan favorite at Fenerbahçe [4]. On April 92006 he scored 2 goals in a Turkcell Super League game against Sivasspor. The second one was his 250th career goal. In 1999, IFFHS named Alex the 3rd best striker in the world. [5] Alex's contract expired at the end of the 2006-2007 season. Fenerbahçe stated the desire to keep him [6] and Alex also stated he wanted to stay at the club. [7]. His agent Juan Figer and Fenerbahçe came to an agreement and signed a 2 year contract with an option for one additional year. [8] [9]. He became Fenerbahçe's captain after the team's captain Ümit Özat's transfer to 1. FC Köln and vice-captains Tuncay Şanlı's transfer to Middlesbrough F.C. and Rüştü Reçber's transfer to rival Beşiktaş JK.[10]
