Albion is a town in Orleans County, New York, USA. The population was 8,042 at the 2000 census. The town was named after a village in the town. The Town of Albion is centrally located in the county, and contains part of the Village of Albion, the county seat.

History

The Town of Albion was created in 1875 by the division of the Town of Barre. The population in 1890 was 1,304.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 25.4 square miles (65.7 km²), of which, 25.2 square miles (65.3 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.47%) is water. The Erie Canal passes through the town. New York State Route 31A and New York State Route 98 intersect near the south town line, and New York State Route 31 passes across the town east to west.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 8,042 people, 2,403 households, and 1,597 families residing in the town. The population density was 318.8 people per square mile (123.1/km²). There were 2,626 housing units at an average density of 104.1/sq mi (40.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 76.86% White, 16.03% Black or African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 4.29% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.12% of the population. There were 2,403 households out of which 36.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.20. In the town the population was spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 36.1% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 138.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 148.7 males. The median income for a household in the town was $34,028, and the median income for a family was $37,188. Males had a median income of $31,960 versus $23,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,890. About 12.8% of families and 14.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.1% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.
